Freely We Received, Freely We Give
The Night Angels Project of Bronx, NY, distributed meals and drinks to passersby on July 26th, 2024. An event that takes place regularly.
It is no mystery that one’s life has its ups and downs, and many are those who, for one reason or another, find themselves facing job, housing, and food insecurities. Living in a crowded city with an independent mindset and culture might make it hard to find solace in times of need.
According to the NY State Department of Health, out of all the NYC boroughs, the Bronx leads in food insecurity among adults. Bronx’s poverty rate was 27.7% in 2022, compared to the 11.5% national rate. The mental state of residents in distress is also alarming—the Bronx had the highest rate of suicide among men in NYC for nearly a decade as of 2016.
Outreach projects from the government and the community have been working on addressing these pressing issues, and the Night Angels team could not have their arms crossed. As for all challenges in life, beyond food and shelter, each soul desperately needs the strength that comes from the Word of God.
“Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons. Freely you have received, freely give.” (Matthew 10:8)
This has been the driving force and purpose behind the Night Angels. As Pastor Joel states on behalf of the group, “Freely we received, freely we give.” Twenty volunteers who freely received deliverance, healing, salvation, and the peace of the Holy Spirit decided to obey God’s Word and give freely to those in distress.
The Night Angels set up stations regularly on Bronx streets and speak to passersby, offering them food, drinks, listening ears, and the prayer and message of faith.
On July 26th, 2024, the Night Angels set up a station on the corner of 149th St and 3rd Ave and distributed sandwiches, soup, bagels, salad, cake, and drinks. This event reached and benefited 50 people that night. One person stated, “You guys came at the right time. I have not eaten in many days.”
