Believing in the Talents of Our Youths
The Youth Power Group (YPG) hosted the Mega Dance Event in Brooklyn, NY, on May 25th, 2024, to encourage NY youths to express themselves and find a positive environment to nurture their talents.
The teen years of a person’s life should be a period of learning, making lasting friendships, and enjoying the security of a home to nurture dreams and future aspirations. Unfortunately, many teens have found themselves facing much adversity. And, if life’s challenges and injustices weren’t enough, many fight a somewhat invisible enemy: a mental health challenge and the few sources of social and emotional support in the community.
According to the 2021 Voicing Our Future survey by the Citizens’ Committee for Children of NY, mental health was among the top 2 concerns of youths in NYC, and mental health resources also topped the list of resources youths wished they had more accessible to them.
With this awareness in mind, the Youth Power Group (YPG) strives to provide a support group, positive friendships, and an encouraging environment for youths, teaching emotional skills based on the Word of God to help them overcome life’s challenges.
YPG has multiple projects to allow youths to express themselves and showcase their talents.
Dance is much more than just fun; it improves well-being. A 2022 study revealed that dance benefits children and adolescents physiologically and psychologically. YPG promotes fun dance activities and competitions during its Sunday get-togethers and especially during its major events.
The Mega Dance Event on May 25th is a great example. Fifteen volunteers helped to organize and host this fun event, which also had the participation of the NYPD, represented by Officer Chase and Officer Dill, who cheered for the youths. This event benefited 60 young people from the Brooklyn, NY area.
YPG believes in creating connections for youths in the community, fostering communication and unity. Youths need the support of community agents such as the NYPD, and those who attended the event were ecstatic and happy to see first responders providing social support.
