The Privilege of Caring for the Community
The Unisocial Team from East Flatbush, NYC, distributed soup and offered prayers and listening ears to passersby on Utica Avenue, NYC, on July 28th, 2024.
East Flatbush is a neighborhood in the borough of Brooklyn, NYC. It is a meeting point for Caribbean culture, arts, and cuisine. It is home to the Little Haiti and Little Caribbean business areas.
Over 154 thousand people live in East Flatbush, 25% reported facing food insecurity, and 16% living in poverty. Food insecurity is also a stressor that harms mental health.
“…he who honors Him has mercy on the needy.” (Proverbs 14:31)
This mercy goes beyond a meal, for the Word of God is not only food for the hungry soul but also freedom for the oppressed. Aware of the issues in their community and the power of the Word of God, seven volunteers of the Unisocial Project of The Universal Church on East Flatbush committed to reaching out to their neighbors.
On July 28th, 2024, Unisocial volunteers distributed hot soup and offered prayers to the passersby at the busy Utica Avenue. Fifty people were reached through this event.
Pastor Alex and the volunteers helped pray for those who requested prayers and needed to speak with someone. Some of those who stopped at the station mentioned how glad they were because they did not have what to eat that night.
The Unisocial Team of East Flatbush will continue this outreach in the neighborhood. “It is a great blessing to help the community.” (Pastor Alex)
