Labor Day Event for Families in Iowa

On Labor Day, September 2nd, 2024, at 4 PM, The Universal Church hosted a family day at the park for families in Iowa.

Iowa Strengths and Its Micronesian Community

Iowa, a state renowned for its agriculture, is one of the top producers of corn and soybeans in the U.S. It’s also famous for its State Fair, where families come together to enjoy food, competitions, and entertainment.

The state of Iowa is home to over 5,700 Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders, among which are Micronesian families that emigrated to Iowa mainly for employment, education, and better health prevention and treatments. These communities have close-knit families, strong friendship bonds, and a great desire to hear the Word of God.

The Universal Church Event for Families in Iowa

On Labor Day, September 2nd, 2024, at 4 PM, The Universal Church hosted a family day at Chris Larsen Park in Sioux City. About 50 people attended the event, mostly from the Micronesian community. The youths played volleyball, the children enjoyed the playground and played on the grass, and the parents relaxed, watched, and chatted over a meal. A prayer and a special message for Labor Day were shared during a dedicated moment.

Prayer and a Special Message

Pastor Valdo Santos delivered a message inspired by the story of Peter in Luke 5. He shared how Peter worked all night without catching any fish, which reflects the struggles many face today. “Just like Peter had nothing to celebrate, many people feel the same this Labor Day. But when Jesus came to Peter, everything changed—he caught so many fish that his net nearly broke. This is what happens when you allow Jesus into your life; everything changes.”

Pastor Valdo Santos added, “This event was for the Micronesian community in Iowa, providing a day for families to come together and enjoy time in a positive environment. With so many families struggling with fights, disagreements, addictions, and abuse, we wanted to offer a day of happiness. We took the time to sit with them, discuss their struggles, and provide prayer and counseling to help them overcome these challenges.”
