Roaring in as a <strong>Category 5 hurricane<\/strong>, Melissa battered the island with relentless winds and torrential rain, flooding towns, uprooting homes, and cutting entire communities off from the rest of the country.<\/big><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nThe western side of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.jm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jamaica<\/a>, particularly <strong>St. Elizabeth Parish<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/disastrous-images-emerge-jamaica-direct-hit-hurricane-melissa\/story?id=126975245\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">suffered some of the worst damage<\/a>. Home to over 150,000 men, women, and children, the devastation there was staggering. In the historic coastal town of <strong>Black River<\/strong>, local officials estimated that <strong>more than nine out of every ten homes<\/strong> were either roofless or severely damaged. Streets turned into rivers as families clung to what little they had left while floodwaters swallowed everything in sight.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsonair.gov.in\/death-toll-from-hurricane-melissa-in-jamaica-rises-to-45-dozens-still-missing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">At least <strong>45 people<\/strong> were confirmed dead<\/a>, and 15 have been missing. Hundreds of homes were flattened, and thousands of families were left without access to <strong>clean water, food, or shelter<\/strong>. With <strong>compassion<\/strong> as their guiding principle, they set out to reach those who had lost everything.<\/p>\n<p>Unisocial volunteers entered the hardest-hit zones without delay.
