The Night Angels of Harlem, NYC, distributed snacks and<\/span> water and offered listening ears and prayers to passersby at Marcus Garvey Park on July 22nd, 2024.<\/span><\/p>\n

Harlem’s Strengths and Challenges<\/span><\/h4>\n

From the 1920s onwards, Harlem has <\/span>held a centerpiece place<\/span> in Black history and culture<\/a><\/span>. The borough was the center of the civil rights movement<\/a><\/span> and the home of famous artists<\/a><\/span> such as Aaron Douglas. H<\/span>arlem is crucial to NYC as it holds so much historical heritage.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, residents of Harlem face many challenges, with the top concerns being safety, employment, and housing.<\/a><\/span> 29% of those living in Central Harlem<\/a><\/span> and 31% of residents of East Harlem<\/a><\/span> live below the poverty level. Mental health also takes its toll\u2014East Harlem had the highest rate<\/a><\/span> of mental health hospitalizations in NYC as of 2015.<\/span><\/p>\n

Bringing Life to Harlem<\/span><\/h4>\n

Twelve volunteers of the Night Angels<\/span><\/strong><\/a> project of The Universal Church of Harlem committed to caring for their community. Only one tool can help a person overcome life’s challenges in every aspect of their life\u2014practical and active faith in the Word of God. <\/span><\/p>\n

“The words that I speak to you are spirit, and\u00a0they are life.” (John 6:63)<\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The Night Angels, along with Bishop Carlos, set up a temporary station in Marcus Garvey Park on July 22nd, 2024. They distributed snacks and water to passersby, including homeless persons in the park. Those who needed someone to talk to had access to counseling and prayer from the pastors.<\/p>\n

Over seventy people were reached<\/span> through this event. The Night Angels<\/a><\/span> prayed for the Harlem community and look forward to repeating the event regularly in different areas of the borough.<\/span><\/p>\n
