According to FBI.gov<\/a><\/span>, \u201cRomance scams occur when a criminal adopts a fake online identity to gain a victim\u2019s affection and trust. The scammer then uses the illusion of a romantic or close relationship to manipulate and steal from the victim.\u201d<\/p>\n In an article by FTC.gov,<\/a><\/span> \u201cIn 2022, nearly 70,000 people reported a romance scam and reported losses hit a staggering $1.3 billion. The median reported loss: $4,400.\u201d<\/p>\n These scammers will appear as a perfect match to the victim, but they do so only to ask for money.
